In this in-depth guide, we’ll explore the art of crafting compelling emails that resonate with your audience and drive those ClickBank commissions through the roof! Plus, I will share concrete affiliate marketing email examples and templates to get you off to a solid start on your affiliate marketing journey.

In marketing, there’s a common saying: “The money is in the list!” As an affiliate marketer, your list of subscribers is your greatest asset, because it’s an audience you can grow and own. No other marketing channel gives you a better opportunity to build meaningful relationships with potential customers!

So, let’s dive in and see how you can make money with email affiliate marketing.

Is Email Good for Affiliate Marketing?

Everyone has an opinion on the best way for affiliate marketers to get clicks on their affiliate links. However, most people don’t back up WHY you should listen to them, because they don’t have enough data to support their viewpoint!

Fortunately, a recent comprehensive survey by Authority Hacker shed light on what is working in the affiliate marketing space. Authority Hacker surveyed 2,270 affiliate marketers who were earning an average of $8,038 per month.

Here’s what their affiliate respondents said:

Primary traffic sources used:

  • 78.3% – SEO (Organic)
  • 35.5% – Social Media (Organic)
  • 22.8% – Email Marketing
  • 12.0% – Social Media (Paid Ads)
  • 8.2% – SEM (Paid Ads)
  • 5.3% – Influencer Marketing
  • 5.1% – Other

The most-popular affiliate networks:

  • 58.5% – Amazon Associates
  • 24.6% – ClickBank
  • 21.8% – ShareASale
  • 20.5% – CJ
  • 15.7% – Impact
  • 11.7% – Awin

In addition to the above, the survey found:

  • Experts use email marketing 47.8% more and SEO 11.6% more than beginners!
  • Affiliate marketers who use email marketing earn 66.4% more than those who don’t!

Source: Authority Hacker

Bottom line? Even though just 22.8% of affiliate marketers use email, the ones who actually establish an email list for promoting products will enjoy substantially higher earnings than those who neglect email marketing.

But why is this true? Let’s look at some of the benefits of email marketing for affiliates before we look at some actual affiliate emails in action.

10 Benefits of Email Marketing for Affiliates

The biggest challenge for affiliate marketers is getting traffic. There are different types of traffic, including channels we control, such as blogging/SEO, and traffic we don’t control, such as paid ads. However, your email list is the only traffic you truly OWN!

The benefits of email marketing as a way of owning your audience include:

  • Targeted Communication: Email marketing allows you to tailor your messages to specific audience segments, ensuring relevant content reaches the right recipients.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to traditional advertising methods, email marketing is a cost-effective way for affiliate marketers to connect with their audience and promote products.
  • Measurable Results: Marketers can track email campaign performance in real-time, measuring metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates to assess the effectiveness of their efforts.
  • Building Relationships: Regular email communication helps build and strengthen relationships with your audience, fostering trust and loyalty over time.
  • Personalization Opportunities: Email marketing enables personalization, allowing you to address recipients by name and tailor content based on their preferences, increasing engagement.
  • Automation and Efficiency: You can automate email campaigns, saving time and effort while maintaining consistent communication with your audience. Email is the only channel that allows you to systematically lead your audience through a sequence of messages.
  • Increased Conversion Rates: By delivering targeted and personalized content, email marketing can lead to higher conversion rates, turning interested subscribers into customers.
  • Cross-Promotion Possibilities: Affiliates can use email marketing to cross-promote products and services, maximizing the potential for earning commissions from various sources.
  • Global Reach: Emails can be sent to a global audience, providing you with the opportunity to reach a diverse set of potential customers.
  • Data-driven Decision Making: The analytics provided by email marketing platforms offer valuable insights that you can use to make informed decisions and optimize your strategies for better results.
  • If done correctly, there are no real disadvantages to using email marketing! Now, before we continue to look at email marketing examples and templates, here are the most common reasons why some affiliates fail to get good results.

Common Email Marketing Mistakes Affiliates Make

    Failing to Add Value

Most regular people have to go through many emails every day and don’t have time (or attention) to waste. Reading emails that are boring or lack meaningful content is on nobody’s list of priorities.

For example, I am subscribed to many newsletters, but I can count on one hand how many I make a point of reading every time. And without exception, the emails I open are the ones that promise to provide some interesting or helpful information.

    Overwhelmingly Promotional

If every email you send promotes a product and reads like an ad, your audience will sooner or later either unsubscribe or stop opening your emails altogether, which will obliterate your deliverability.

For affiliate marketing emails to be effective, prioritize writing high-quality content about topics your target audience wants to read. If you can pull that off, nobody will mind if you add a link to a product you’re promoting. Sending purely promotional emails should be an exception and not the rule!

    Being Lazy

Many affiliate programs will give you sample emails or email templates you can use to promote their product(s). Affiliates often make the mistake of copying and pasting these emails without adding any context or editing them to be a better fit for their own target audience.

By all means, use the content you get from the affiliate programs you’re promoting as inspiration, but let your personality shine through in the emails you send to your subscribers.

    Ignoring Permission-Based Marketing

This one is a no-brainer and I should not even have to mention it. Sending emails without obtaining proper consent can lead to spam complaints and damage your reputation. Always ensure that recipients have opted in to receive emails from you!

    Neglecting Mobile Optimization

Most top email service providers will deliver your content in a mobile-friendly format. However, don’t take this for granted – sign up as a subscriber to your own list and make sure your emails appear like you want them to look on not just your computer, but also your mobile device.

Overlooking a subscriber’s mobile experience can result in poorly formatted emails and reduced engagement, as a significant portion of subscribers access their emails on mobile devices.

    Sending Too Many Emails

Bombarding subscribers with too many emails can lead to fatigue and increased unsubscribe rates. Striking the right balance in email frequency is crucial for maintaining audience interest.

    Lack of Personalization

Failing to personalize emails can diminish their effectiveness or make them appear like spam.

The reader should feel like you are directly talking to them by, for example, mentioning their name and delivering highly relevant content.

    Poor Subject Lines

An attention-grabbing subject line is crucial for getting your subscribers to open emails. If the subject line is not intriguing or relevant, your email may be ignored.

Examples of intriguing subject lines include:

    • [Name], I have a special offer for you
    • Hey [name], I think you will the new [product]
    • Haven’t seen you recently [name], here’s what you missed

An experiment done by the Stanford Graduate School of Business found that adding the name of the message recipient to the email’s subject line increases the probability of the recipient opening it by 20%, which translates to an increase in sales leads by 31% and a reduction in the number of individuals unsubscribing from the email campaign by 17%.

    Poor or Poorly Written Content

Poorly written emails that contain grammar or spelling errors or don’t provide engaging or high-quality content will make your subscribers lose interest fast.

Neglecting to Monitor Campaign Results and Make Improvements

If less than 10% of the subscribers on your list open your emails, you have a problem. By examining the analytics of your email campaigns, you can discover which emails perform best – with high open rates of 25%+ and click-through rates of at least 1-2% – and make improvements.

So what is a good open rate? There is no easy answer to this question. Factors such as your niche, timing, and the relationship with your audience all play a role!

Here are some opinions on what a good open rate is:

    • “A good email open rate should be between 17-28%.” (CampaignMonitor.com)
    • “The average open rate for all industries we analyzed is 21.33%.” (Mailchimp.com)
    • “We found that the average open rate across all industries is 38.49%.” (HubSpot.com)
    • “Anything between 15-25% is a good email open rate.” (ConstantContact.com)
    • “A good open rate is between 17-28%.” (Mailmunch.com)
    • “A good email open rate is somewhere around 20%.” (Moosend.com)

As an affiliate marketer, your open rate is important. However, if readers don’t click the link(s) in the body of your email, you need to review and improve your emails. Reevaluate the audience, the subject line, the preview text, the copy, and the creative – and ideally, conduct split tests to arrive at a data-driven answer.

    Ignoring Segmentation Opportunities

Failing to segment email campaigns based on factors such as interests and behaviors can result in lost opportunities.

For example, we all have hectic days where we don’t have the time to read an email and plan on reading it later, but never get to it. By retargeting subscribers that did not open your email the first time, you get a second bite at the cherry without annoying subscribers who read your email but are not ready or willing to act on it.

    Not Staying in Regular Contact

Out of sight, out of mind! If you do not stay in regular contact with your email subscribers, they will quickly lose interest in you or won’t even remember why they signed up! Reviving a dead list or rebuilding trust and relationships with old subscribers is an uphill struggle.

Try to reach out to your subscribers at least once a week, but do not email them more than three times in a single week, unless you have a good reason for it.

Sending Content That Does Not Directly Apply to Your Target Audience

It might seem obvious, but many affiliates make the mistake of not staying focused on the reason(s) people subscribe to their list. If someone joins your list because they want to receive information on Topic X, do not send them information on Topic Y (unless the topics are closely related and relevant).

    Promoting Irrelevant Affiliates Offers

There’s nothing wrong with promoting a lucrative affiliate product to your audience – in fact, we encourage it! But you still need to make sure that it’s relevant to your email subscribers. If you promote an offer that isn’t relevant and doesn’t resonate with your audience, you run the risk of alienating them and damaging your reputation.

Not Giving People a Reason to Subscribe

Most visitors who land on your website or landing page didn’t go there with the intention to sign up for your email list, and they won’t subscribe unless you give them a reason to. There should be something in it for them, such as relevant content they want to receive or a special offer they want to take advantage of. Make it clear what benefits they can expect to receive when they sign up!

Not Making It Obvious That You Have an Email List

Nobody is going to search for a way to join your newsletter or click on an obscure link in the footer of your website. Make it easy for people to join your email list by placing the signup form in a prominent location with a clear call to action.

Where to Find Affiliate Marketing Email Examples

Many sellers try to make it as easy as possible for affiliates to promote their products by providing helpful tools, including sample emails.

For example, when you log into the ClickBank marketplace and visit the “affiliate tools page” for many of the top ClickBank products, you can easily find “email swipes” that will help you promote those specific products to your audience!

    LIv Pure affiliate tools page

In addition, in ClickBank Accelerator, our brand-new funnel builder, we not only have email functionality built-in, but you can also load it up with these affiliate marketing email sequences straight from the product owner, so you can start promoting to your audience quickly and easily!

Here’s an example from the popular financial manifestation offer, Wealth DNA. I’ve got an automated sequence of four emails set to go out to each new contact who signs up for my email address (assigned to the “wealth dna” tag inside Accelerator’s email tool).

Looking at an offer owner’s affiliate tools page (sometimes called a support page or just an affiliate page) is a great way to get emails you can plug into your autoresponder of choice. Read on for examples!

Breaking Down 5 Affiliate Marketing Email Examples

Now that we’ve looked at what makes email so powerful for affiliates, here are five actual “email swipe” examples from current sellers on the ClickBank marketplace. These provide affiliates with copy to help them promote their products!

    Example #1: Wealth DNA Code

Wealth DNA Code by Alex Maxwell is an audio product that teaches a system on how to attract money by activating your “Wealth DNA.”

Alex provides affiliates with several email swipes, including Christian swipes, they can copy from Google Docs. In addition, some of the emails have multiple subject headlines to choose from.

Here is one example of an email swipe from Wealth DNA Code:

    Swipe #1

    Subject: Wealth DNA recently discovered

    Dear {!firstname_fix},

An Earth-shattering secret NASA experiment is finally being exposed…

All thanks to the brave actions of one rogue NASA scientist.

And this top-secret experiment reveals a shocking truth about our DNA.

And proves something that the teachings of the ancient chakras have been claiming for thousands of years.

That we actually possess Wealth DNA inside of ourselves.

You see modern scientists call it “DNA” but ancient eastern teaching referred to it as “chakras.”

But whether you want to use the modern term of the traditional language, the fact remains the same…

All you need to do is “activate” the energy center that attracts wealth…

And money and abundance will start flowing into your life effortlessly.

The leaked experiment shows you how.

If the page is still up, you can discover the truth HERE.

Here is a quick analysis of the email:

    • It has an attention-grabbing headline.
    • The first sentence mentions a NASA experiment, which adds credibility to the subject line.
    • The next sentence mentions “the brave actions of one rogue NASA scientist,” adding intrigue that encourages people to continue reading to find out how the story unfolds.
    • “All you need to do is “activate” the energy center that attracts wealth…” conveys that it is not a difficult process and easy to achieve.
    • The email ends with a strong call-to-action and creates a sense of urgency by stating: “If the page is still up, you can discover the truth HERE.”

    Example #2: Social Sales Rep

Social Sales rep helps people to find their perfect online job, depending on their needs: side hustle, part-time job, or full-time income.

Affiliates receive access to 20 of their best converting email swipes. And, you can contact Social Sales rep if you need custom email swipes or specific content.

Here is an example of an email swipe from Social Sales rep:

    Email 1

    Subject Line:Chat for cash? Yes please!Pre header:$37 / hrBody:Hey [NAME]

Do you want to take your online job from virtual to reality? Now is your chance if you are looking for a fun and rewarding way to make money from home. Live chat assistants are in huge demand worldwide right now.

These are no ordinary jobs as they involve answering customer questions, providing sales links, and offering discounts, which means a lot of opportunities for growth in this field. The hours will vary each week, so there are always times when it would fit your schedule, even if you already have another job!

We don’t require any qualifications other than a device that can access business chat functions such as social media and website chat functions like phones, tablets, or laptops. As long as you can follow instructions and work independently, have a reliable internet connection, and work from your country, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

    Complete your application here.Best Wishes,[Signature]

Here is a quick analysis of the email:

    • The subject line “Chat for cash? Yes please!” can be improved. It is typically not good practice to ask questions that can be answered with YES or NO. And in this case, the sender answers the question on behalf of the reader.
    • The first sentence “Do you want to take your online job from virtual to reality?” is a bit ambiguous. However, the copy does clarify it afterward by mentioning “make money from home” and stating that live chat assistants are in huge demand.
    • Social Sales rep does a good job in answering questions readers might have, such as what the job entails, opportunities for growth, amount of time required, and requirements.
    • It does contain a call for action – “complete your application here” – albeit not a very strong one.

Example #3: The Billionaire Brain Wave

The Billionaire Brain Wave shares a brain wave ritual studied by scientists in four neuroscience labs that manifest abundance.

Affiliates have access to six high-converting email swipes, and eight more, if needed.

Here is one example of an email swipe from The Billionaire Brain Wave:

    Email 1

Subject: Ancient “song” helps 18,000+ find money effortlessly

    From: DaVinci Brain Code

    Dear Reader,

When Dr. Thomas Summers set out to study the effect of brain waves on personal wealth…

(And how this 7-minute “song” can attract money into your life…)

He didn’t know it would put a target on his back.

After pouring over secretive CIA research – Dr. Summer’s findings were so powerful, he said: “This breakthrough will rank up there with the discovery of gravity and electricity.”

A leading neuroscientist for 34 years, Dr. Summers was among the very first scientists to investigate the link between brain waves & money.

Some close associates were lucky enough to test drive his research.

    The results?

One instantly paid off decades of credit card debt

One showed up to work driving a brand-new Porsche

Yet another bought a 4,400 square foot home for his family.

But that was just the start…

Now 18,000+ formerly cash-strapped people replaced worrisome bills & debt with their dream home, car & vacation.

It all comes down to activating this tiny power source sitting dormant inside your brain.

    It’s completely safe… takes just a few minutes…

And has nothing to do with manifestation, affirmations, or law of attraction.

(Leonardo DaVinci & Thomas Edison spent years trying to unravel its mysteries.)

Discover how this 7-minute “song” can make money start appearing everywhere in your life

    Best,

    SIGN OFF

Here is a quick analysis of the email:

    • It has an attention-grabbing headline. However, it does not address the reader directly.
    • Addressing the reader as “Dear Reader” is bland. It should be personalized for better results.
    • Mentioning “secretive CIA research” and that it has nothing to do with manifestation, affirmations, or the law of attraction hooks the reader by reinforcing that this secret is something they haven’t encountered before.
    • The use of money emojis to describe success stories might be a bit overdone.
    • The call-to-action could be more direct. For example, it could include action words, such as “click here” or “click this link” instead of “discover how.” You will typically get better results by telling readers what to do than by assuming they will click on your affiliate link.

    Example #4: Hard Wood Tonic

Hard Wood Tonic sells a dietary supplement in the male sexual health niche, called Red Boost.

The company provides affiliates with email creatives they can copy from Google Docs. It includes several different subject lines for each email so affiliates can choose the most compelling subject line they think will resonate best with their audience.

Here is an example of an email swipe from Hard Wood Tonic:

    Email 1

    From: erectile drink

    From: Men Only

    From: MEN ONLY

    From: erectile tonic

    Subject: clogged penile arteries

Subject: Remove “penile clog” in 2 minutes with this

New research shows that if a man cannot “get it up” in the bedroom…

It’s NOT because of his poor blood circulation and…

It’s NOT even down to his low testosterone levels….

It’s something completely different that you can reverse in 48 hours with the help of a potent “erectile tonic” that stiffens you up in 2 minutes or so…

    >> Discover the potent “erectile tonic” men are taking to rapidly harden up in bed

It’s completely natural, easy to make and full of ingredients you can find at your store.

With the help of this potent erectile tonic:

    >> Discover the “erectile tonic” that STIFFENS your pole in minutes

    To your good health,

    NAME

Here is a quick analysis of the email:

    • Getting an email from “erectile tonic” or “MEN ONLY” with a subject line like “clogged penile arteries” might easily be mistaken for spam. You want people to open and read your email because they recognize your name and trust you.
    • The body of the email contains some good content that you can include in your email.
    • The call-to-action could be more direct. It is typically better to tell people what to do, such as “click here” or “click this link,” instead of only saying “discover.”

    Example #5: The Smoothie Diet

As the name suggests, The Smoothie Diet focuses on people in the health niche who want to lose weight while enjoying delicious, easy-to-make smoothies. According to the seller, over 20,000 people worldwide have lost weight with the 21-Day Smoothie Diet™ challenge.

The Smoothie Diet gives affiliates several presell emails they can download to promote the diet.

Here is an example of an email swipe from The Smoothe Diet:

Subject: Mom of 2 sheds 70 lbs. with this one weird drink

Weight loss stories are everywhere nowadays, but this is one you have to see to believe.

    It’s literally going VIRAL.

    >> Watch the video here

Here is a quick analysis of the email:

    • The subject line is intriguing but might appear as clickbait or a sensational tabloid headline, casting doubt in the minds of readers on whether this applies to them.
    • The email is not personalized and might be flagged as spam by some autoresponders.
    • The body of the email tells a good story and mentions that ANYONE can do it.
    • It has a good call-to-action that tells readers what to do, namely watch the video, and that it will change the way the reader looks at weight loss.

3 Takeaways from Affiliate Marketing Emails

Okay, we just looked at examples of 5 affiliate marketing emails for high-converting offers on ClickBank. What are the big takeaways?

  • The hooks are specific, but vague. Like with paid media campaigns, effective direct response emails are crafted to evoke curiosity. That’s why they usually share a concrete result, like “lose 70 pounds,” but with a vague mechanism, such as “with this one weird drink.” You know your audience is already interested in the result if they signed up for your email list, so now it’s just getting them to click your affiliate link and go to the sales page.
  • They feature different creatives. Images are often more important than copy once someone has already opened an email. Like with compelling paid ads, images in emails draw the eye and encourage engagement. Don’t neglect this important factor!
  • They contain an interesting story. Storytelling is a universal human pastime. Collectively, we can’t get enough of them! So don’t be afraid to use one of these email swipes as a template for telling your own compelling story about a product or future state.
  • These are some important points to keep in mind. Now, let’s get a little deeper into the process of writing your own emails!

How do you write an email for affiliate marketing?

If you are new to affiliate marketing, writing an email from scratch can be challenging. Using email swipes can make the process much easier (since most of the work has been done for you!). However, let your personality shine through and revise the email to make sure it’s a good fit for your readers.

Whether you want to customize an email swipe or write your own email from square one, here are some principles that can improve your click-through rate and boost your affiliate earnings:

    Follow AIDA

AIDA is an acronym for Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action.

Step 1: Attention – Use an attention-grabbing headline that will make people want to open your email. Make sure the content of your email is consistent with your headline.

Step 2: Interest – Your first sentence or paragraph should be captivating and make the reader want to learn more about what you are offering.

Step 3: Desire – Explain how the product you are promoting will solve a pain point the reader is experiencing.

Step 4: Action – Tell the reader what to do, namely click on your affiliate link.

    8 Additional Tips:

  • Personalization – Personalize your email by mentioning the name of the recipient (and possibly yourself as well).
  • Typography – Use short sentences and paragraphs.
  • Be your audience – Assuming you are part of your target audience, would you open the email and click on the affiliate link? If you’re not sure, ask someone to give you their honest opinion.
  • Proofread – Always proofread your email and verify links are working. You can always send a preview or test email to your own inbox before you hit send on a broadcast email or push an automation live.
  • Promote, don’t sell – Your job as an affiliate is not to sell the product but to warm up prospects so they will be receptive when they land on the seller’s landing page. You can speak to the pain points, the general solution, and the future state your readers will enjoy – but you usually shouldn’t identify the product itself or try to sell it. That’s the product owner’s job on their sales page.
  • Tell a story – If possible, tell a story of how the product made a difference in your life or the life of someone else. People love stories and can relate to them a lot easier!
  • Keep it simple – Do not use overly complicated words in the body of your email.
  • Follow up sequence – People often do not buy high-ticket items after receiving a single email about it. Depending on the product(s) you’re promoting, you should plan to schedule follow-up emails that mention additional benefits or case studies.
  • Affiliate Marketing Email Template Examples

Here are three popular email templates for promoting affiliate offers you can use as inspiration:

    Template 1: The Storyteller’s Approach
